* What are your thoughts and beliefs about war?
* Do you feel that the United States should ever be involved in war? Why? Why not?
* What do you know about the Vietnam War?
1. I believe that war is necessary to bring the corrupt to justice and pay the price for a bigger prize. I feel like the United States should only go into war if the cause is just and it is necessary to protect our people. Otherwise I do not believe in imperialism. I know that the Vietnam War was fought against the communists to protect the democracy of the Vietnamese people of the South.

The Things They Carried: Blog Prompt #3
1. Wes Hamilton being upset about not even knowing a soldier's name really shows us the connection that Wes had with the men who protected him throughout his time at war. The emotional distress that had occurred really shows us how his personality has changed. I think the soldiers in The Things They Carried have more or less level of relationship with one another. With what we have read so far I would think that the men have a less of a relationship than Wes Hamilton had with his platoon. In the novel, the soldiers get in some fights and don't really talk to each other as much as Wes did with his troops. One really close relationship was when Kiowa died and all the troops went and searched for his body and stopped making jokes. http://www.aaanything.net/wp-content/gallery/girls-drool-on-bear-grylls/bear_grylls_burried_in_mud.jpg
2. Tim O'Brien portrays a strong fearless female soldier to either show the equality of woman or the fact on how anyone could be manipulated. Either way, O'Brien shows how even a young beautiful innocent looking female can turn into a ruthless animal with no morals. He wants to tell us how anyone of us strong or weak can be changed by the clutches of war. Such as Mary Anne coming in as a beautiful girl to a tribal freak who wore tongues around her neck.

3. I don't think that non-fiction or fiction pulls away from any of the legitimacy from the book. The fiction sections of the novel show an emotional side Tim O'Brien wants us to see that he cannot pull from actual events. But, with non-fictional events, we can see the realism and put ourselves in a soldier's point of view in the Vietnam War. As long as it gives us similar emotions or views the soldier's faced during the war I don't think it will distract from the story. Like the parts where he explained how Kiowa sunk into the mud, real or not, it gives us something to really grab hold of and put ourselves in the position on whether or not we would or wouldn't save him. The sights, smells, actions of war. http://nerdplosion.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/black-ops1.jpg

The Things They Carried Prompt #2
The other things that the soldiers' carried were not only tangible but the intangible emotions that lingered with them along their journey. These intangible emotions haunted them as a huge burden everyone carried. For example, Jimmy Cross carried love as well as regret. The thoughts and dreams of Martha and the horrid flashbacks of Ted Lavender's body falling like concrete due to his carelessness.
Jimmy Cross, one of the most talked about characters in the novel, is the Lieutenant of the platoon. His primary thoughts are about his love Martha. His love drunk emotions had turned for the bad when one of the soldiers, Ted Lavender, was shot while on duty. After, his views about his love life changed and so did his priorities. I predict that his love drunkiness will later haunt him again later in the novel.
All of these things were connected again by emotion. The sadness, anger, and hate were all related to the Vietnam war. These all can be related also by the risks everyone took. Like Daniel taking his risk by leaking the pentagon papers and Lieutenant Jimmy Cross taking a risk by burning his belongings of Martha that he once cherished more than his life.

What The Great Gatsby means to me
In the novel, The Great Gatsby, the character's emotions and multiple events related to my life in various ways. One aspect I see from the novel is trust. Throughout the story, trusts are frequently being made and broken.
The most difficult trust was between Gatsby and Daisy. Perhaps Daisy never trusted anyone at all. In the beginning, Gatsby fully believes that Daisy was his other half and put trusted her with all his heart. Even as she chose Tom to wed instead of him, he always believed she would someday come back to him and fulfill their missing love. Little does he know, Daisy also loved Tom and when Gatsby asked her to proclaim that she never loved him, she lies. The night after Myrtle's death, Daisy gives no sign for Gatsby and leaves him forever. This may seem like the trust that they had was not real and she just used him for his love and fortune.
Not only just Gatsby and Daisy there was the trust between Daisy, Tom, Myrtle, and Wilson that was broken. Both had an affair effecting their already crumbling relationship. This shows all the selfishness the characters claim in the novel only caring about themselves and not others.
This all may relate to my life in many different aspects. What I do with my trust and how I can gain the trust of others. Unlike many of the characters from the novel I like to cherish the trust of others and not deceive them and I hope to gain the trust of others to be able to lie on any of my burdens in safe hands. Trust is truly important because it helps us all get through difficult situations together and not on our own.
The novel is something I really don't wish my life reflected with. It really shows the darker side of people and how you cannot trust anyone. I want to be able to trust someone with my secrets and problems in order to help me in the future.

The Great Gatsby - Chapter 1 - 4
The most appealing character to me in the novel thus far would have to be Gatsby. There's so much more to him than meets the eye and you can't seem to believe certain things about him. He talks to Nick about his military life which seems to be a little bit fake. This however, leads me to wanting to find more about Gatsby.
Gatsby is connected with light in chapter one. This may symbolize goodness within him as his friend talks about Gatsby being a good person who you would want to show to your mother or sister.

The Great Gatsby Characters Chapter 1
Nick, Daisy, Tom and Jordan.
Nick - Nick is narrator of the story. He fought in WWI and is poor compared to his rich parents. He seems very laid back uses sarcasm often.
Daisy - Nick's cousin twice removed seems to be in dramatic moods since her husband, Tom is cheating on her.
Tom - is a white supremacist who has a big build and is cheating on Daisy with a girl from New York.
Jordan - is a tennis player who is setup with Nick
The book so far is uninteresting and provides a ton of detail. White so far seems to be a symbolism as supremacy is brought up.

The Great Gatsby
I anticipate that there would be a secret smuggling of alcohol relating to the book and how the main character is involved in it.
I researched a ton on the prohibition of alocohol and how it made crimes worse and such things.
